What is a ring main and how does it work?

A ring main, or final circuit, is exactly what it says on the tin. It is a ring of cables, usually 2.5mm carrying twin and earth wires, circling your home, carrying the mains electricity to sockets on the way. It gets the power from the consumer unit and delivers it to the sockets.

How does a ring main work?

The power sockets in a house are connected by means of a ring circuit. In a ring circuit the live, neutral and earth wires form a loop of cable going from the consumer unit to all of the sockets in turn and then back to the consumer unit. The live wire carries current to the house/appliance at a high voltage.

What does a ring main unit do?

1. Ring Main Unit (RMU) Definition. RMU (Ring Main Unit) cabinet or medium voltage cabinet is integrated electrical equipment to connect, measure, and integrate fixed type breaker with transformer protection function. RMU cabinets are small in size, highly reliable, safe, easy to maintain, easy to replace, and expand.

Why is a ring main distribution system?

Objective of Ring Main Distribution Network: The main aim of this ring main network is to provide consumers uninterrupted supply. This is possible by feeding consumers with another healthy feeder in case of loss of supply due to working feeder.

How many watts can a ring main handle?

A ring circuit is considered to be rated at 30amps (7200 watts). A ring may serve up to 100 m sq of floor area and, in theory, may have any number of sockets outlets or fused connection units connected to it.

Are ring circuits still used?

Yes, ring mains (more correctly called ring final circuits these days) were and still are the norm for most UK dwellings. A very common arrangement was two ring final circuits, one for upstairs and one for downstairs.

What are the advantages of ring system?

Expert Answer:

  • The two most common advantages of the ring system are as follows:
  • – Voltage drop across the circuit is less or negligible when compared with the tree system.
  • – More appliances can be connected across the circuits as the supply is radially distributed across the space.

What is the difference between switchgear and ring main unit?

Ring main unit is a compact, sealed and enclosed type of switchgear. These are utilized for medium voltage power distribution. Complete switchgear simply means, assembly of needed switching devices. It also includes a protection device and a metering device.

Why is the ring main distribution system more reliable?

Ring main distribution system is more reliable than radial because in this system the load (consumer) is being fed by more then one feeder and in case of failure of one feeder there is an alternative path to supply power to the connected load.

What is the maximum load on a ring main?

It is normally protected by a 30 amp fuse or 32amp circuit breaker, it can have any number of sockets or fused connection units on it but the maximum load is 7200 watts.

What do you mean by ring main unit?

Consumer unit. Electrical switch. Earthing system. v. t. e. In an electrical power distribution system, a ring main unit ( RMU) is a factory assembled, metal enclosed set of switchgear used at the load connection points of a ring-type distribution network. It includes in one unit two switches that can connect the load to

How does the ring main distribution system work?

Every consumer has redundant supply in Ring main distribution system. The figure shows the circuit diagram of ring main network used for distribution (Secondary) of power to houses and small industries. supplies, via two incoming circuit breakers and a Normally Open bus-section in the primary Substation.

What kind of circuit is a ring main?

What is a ring main? Within the electrical industry, the ring main circuit (sometimes ring main, or ring final circuit) is an electrical wiring technique that is most commonly used in the UK. The ring circuit is made up of two radial circuits connected to the same series of accessories within the circuit.

When is a ring main system called an interconnected system?

Interconnected distribution system. When a ring main feeder is energized by two or more substations or generating stations, it is called as an interconnected distribution system. This system ensures reliability in an event of transmission failure.
